This was a fun read, it is a trope that we’ve read before, an out and proud character combined with an in the closet sports figure. The author gave their unique perspective on this story line that kept the story fresh and interesting.
There is a reason I said interesting, this is a long book 334 page but yet it never dragged out, it moved at a good pace and kept me interested throughout it’s entirety. The author had enough twists and turns in the story line that kept the story fresh and yes, interesting.
The angst level is pretty high in this book and is most prevalent in the back stories of each of the characters. Seth has to deal with being “used” a sort of emotional abuse that was pushed on him by his college coach. As the reader I could see what the problem was long before Seth did and in the back of my mind I kept saying “Come on kid, look at this jerk and see what he is doing to you”
Colby has to deal with a boyfriend that cheated. Colby discovers his boyfriend deep in the arse of the neighbor. Colby is smart and extricates himself from the relationship. With both Colby’s cheating boyfriend and Seth’s college coach after they were discovered they came across as almost desperate to win the hearts of their men back. I felt this was a bit contrived, OR is it an ego thing on the part of these men? In their minds are they the ones that cannot be dumped?
Seth and Colby’s relationship which was supposed to have started as a hook up didn’t quite go the way either of them expected. They sort of liked each other and found a connection. It also helped that Colby was clueless to the quasi celebrity status that Seth has gained in the NFL as a quarterback in San Diego. Even though Seth lied to Colby about his profession I sort of got it in a way that I didn’t mind.
I found this book fun, compound the fact that this is a debut author it is a job well done. I think the author kept it real, the decisions that the characters made felt realistic for the situation and the timing in which they occurred. The one slip I’m going to give this book is the ending, it is convenient and in my belief not what would happen in today’s NFL, of course I may be wrong.
Seth Mercer is at the top of his game when a secret threatens to topple him. Lust draws him into a dark pit and he’s unsure how to break away from a destructive force. Angry at himself, and his mistakes, he vows to never enter into another relationship again, until he has a special hook up with Colby.
Colby Larsen learns the truth about his ex and is devastated. He throws himself into his work, vowing to never get emotionally involved again. When he meets Seth, Colby is unprepared for how connected they become.
Seth has a secret and he can’t tell Colby. Colby can’t accept betrayal of any sort after being fooled by his cheating ex. When he finds out Seth has been hiding important information from him, will it end their relationship or draw them closer together?
