I am very pleased to Welcome the writing duo of Bella Liddell and Chance Christopher to the blog today. We have an interview and a Spotlight on their Stranger series.
Tell us a little about yourself, if you were to pick something what would you like others to absolutely know about you?
Chance: I’m a huge Shania Twain fanboy. I’ve seen her in concert more times than I can count, I’ve met her husband and her sister, and I’ve met Shania on more than one occasion. I actually got her to sign my arm in Las Vegas and I got it tattooed. If you’re riding in my car, there’s a good chance I’m blasting Shania.
Bella: I’m a mother of three, including an 8-year-old genderqueer child. I’ve always been a huge LGBT ally, knowing and loving several people in the community, but it’s different raising a kid and trying to do it right. It’s up to me to be his strongest advocate, and it’s a responsibility I take seriously.
If you had the power to create law, what would be the most important law you would create? (other than jail time for not using your turn signal while driving)
Chance: Writing in the adult-fiction (erotica) genre, I feel strongly that nobody should have the ability to tell someone what they can do with their free time. I’ve had a couple of friends get their credit cards terminated because they used them on adult websites, and I think that’s totally wrong. I would prohibit credit card companies from interfering in transactions that are perfectly legal.
What are 5 things you can’t live without?
Chance: My cats (Tigger and Pyn-wackette), Starbucks, Facebook, my iPad, and cigarettes.
Bella: Skinny lattes, my phone, my over-stuffed purse, my journal, and my friends/family.
Some of our readers might not know much about The Stranger series. Are you able to tell us a bit about it?
Chance: The Stranger is a twisty, turny love story that also happens to be a spy thriller. The passion between the two main characters really shines through, I think, and that’s why it’s our most popular series.
How did your Family and Friends respond, when you told them that your wrote in the M/M genre?
Bella: They were completely awesome about it. I “came out” on Facebook a couple of months ago and was overwhelmed by the support and love that came back at me. My family has known about it since the beginning. My mother is a huge fan of our books, gay porn and all. She’s pretty amazing.
Talk to us about your experiences as a self-published author. Why did you go down this route?
Chance: As a lover of gay fiction I always found myself reading other writers’ work and mentally rewriting it to, in my mind, make it different or better. I have seen other writers make a lot of mistakes going the traditional publishing route, but I knew we had something to contribute to the genre. So self-publishing was always the way to go.
What is your average writing day like?
Bella: Chance and I both have crazy, different schedules. We have to deliberately carve out time to write: we both have jobs, I have the kids, we both have lives. We do a lot of writing by Skype and with Google Docs so that we can be editing the same document simultaneously. But we treasure the time we get to write together, in-person. We’re actually trying to pencil in a writing retreat next month to get away from it all and just spend a couple of days pounding out some stories.
Chance and Bella: Books, books, and more books! We made a New Year’s Resolution for 2016 to have 20 books published by the end of the year, and we’re about halfway there. We will have to work hard to stay on schedule, but we both feel confident that we can do it.
