Unexpected Mating by Toby Aden is about three men two vampires, Justin and Mike, who by the way are off again and on again lovers, and one werewolf named Shawn. The book starts out with Shawn seeing Justin at some party, immediately is drawn to the man only to on page five realize the vampire who hates shifters is his mate. Together they are paired by the wolf Alpha and vampire king to build this night club where werewolves and vampire can co-exist. Through Justin Shawn meets the very flamboyant but strong interior designer Mike and they soon realize that they are a threesome, that all men have been granted two mates and not just one.
It pains me to down rate this book, it really does, because there’s not enough good paranormal series out there that either, like this one lacks story or goes completely overboard with the mating/claiming/I’m a shifter so therefor I own you mentality. And that is what Toby Aden does well with this book not everything is about claim you here and claim you there even if it exists they are beings first and just happens to be shifters and vampires. That together with the fact that about ⅔ into the book we finally get some story to why Justin hate shifters, mind you now it isn’t a lot but some, and we get to follow Shawn through an experience that at least I haven’t seen in the shifter world before nothing earth shattering but still enough to give the story some substance which is what saves it.
The best thing about the book is Mike, he’s strong, colorful, in more than his color hair, and he is the glue that holds it all together. He has personality and it is the only of the three characters that really sticks out and makes you curious to what is in store for the trio.
The story is way too thin, to unrealistic for me to be able to enjoy it fully. I am fairly familiar as an writer with the pov switching in the middle of a chapter, it’s hard not to do that I’ve worked very hard myself to get out of that habit however, the fact that there are chapters where the pov view switches back and forth between three characters in each paragraph and there’s no way in knowing who is thinking what it is hard to get a grip on who is talking.
Do I think Toby Aden should give up writing, hell no! Keep at it, dare to kick me and others in the teeth so to speak.
Justin Chandler hates shifters. In fact, the one thing he associates with shifter is how fast he can kill them. And fate, the bitch, saw to it that his most hated enemy is his mate, and there’s just no way he can ever accept that.
The one thing Shawn McKay held sacred was the anticipation of his mate. As a werewolf, he’d always dreamed of finding his mate. After meeting Justin at a party, he couldn’t deny the intrigue he felt, knowing full well that he had finally found his mate. What he did not expect was meeting Mike Beckley, another vampire and his other mate.
Mike Beckley is a sweet, caring sometimes-oblivious fashion guru and Justin’s on-again, off-again lover. His job as an interior decorator led him straight to his mates, but, with the animosity between his two mates, what will become of the three men?
