This is book two in the Opposites series. Ms. Smith has taken the first of her series, and really expanded the story, bringing us closer to the characters, and taking us into the lives of the people we started following in book number one.
This book starts with a look back at the birth of Cillian, and explains the process of gene mapping that rules the births, marriages, and other aspects of the people’s lives. Within this first short chapter marked Prologue, we see the beginnings of the mystery and tension that builds throughout Appearances.
The pairs of characters include Aiyan and Kaden, Tanis and Raven, Aiya and Maeve, all the different pairs of parents that are involved, along with Sawyer, Marcus, and a few surprises as the story progresses.
This book had some great moments in it. There is a murder, death, angst, miscommunication, hatred, as well as love and some terrific sex. The scenes between Aiyan and Kaden are just as hot and ultimately funny as they were in Opposites. And Raven discovering the full gamut of sexual play with Tanis is also super-hot and sexy. And the portrayal of the love between the different couples is so well written that it is totally believable, and makes one wish to find that love in their lives.
There are moments of great tension for the reader as one of our heroes puts himself into the line of danger to save another of his family, and the scene of a favorite outsider of one of the families being murdered, and the surprise of who did the deed, and why. There is so much going on in this book, at such a great pace, that I found it really hard to put down. As in Opposites, the book follows the big families, but it was easier to read than the first because I had now been introduced to the different families and pairings and didn’t have trouble keeping them separate and identified.
Along with the murder mystery is the drama of Aiya, Maeve, and Sawyer and the position they have put themselves into, and the danger this position proves to cause for the families. Along the way, Ms. Smith explains the whys of what is happening and relates it to history so you can get even more acquainted with the people, places, and rules and regulations they live under.
If there was one thing I could complain about, is that at times, I felt like I was reading a bible story. The religion of this land is the same as Christianity, and Ms.
Smith uses bible verses in some places. I found this a little distracting, and a little bit of a letdown because with her imagination, I think she could have really come
up with something different, seeing as the culture of the land is so unlike that of today.
I am just in awe of TM Smith’s imagination. Notwithstanding the religious part of the story, the whole series is so thought out. She covers what seems to be all the questions a person might have, and with her short books between, brings even more understanding of the houses, and the parents of the main characters.

Appearances, can be deceiving.
Raven and Tanis are trying very hard to merge their vastly different lifestyles, but Tanis issues with his own past could prove to be more than their fragile relationship can handle. Is their love for each other strong enough to weather the oncoming storm?
Aiya and Sawyer have fought hard to be together in a world where Opposite relationships are generally forbidden. Yet, they are still forced to keep their relationship a secret while they are outside the walls of House Gaeland.
Everyone assumes that the only threat lies outside their walls, the group of rebels led by Cillian. But something is happening within House Gaeland, something that hasn’t happened since GWI. And with all the attention focused on that, their guard is down. An evil that was under their nose all along strikes, and someone will make the ultimate sacrifice to save another.
Appearances is the second book in the Opposites series, the series should be read in order.
