This was an original story, one that I have not heard before which made this book that much more interesting. This story is written through the eyes of the Main Character Derrick “Bear”. At the age of 17 his Mother left Bear and his 6 year old brother, she did leave a note though, pretty classy. Bear was left to take over the care and raising of “Kid”. With the help of his best friend Creed and his Girlfriend Anna along with their parents, Bear and Kid have found a new family.
This book covers 3-4 years where we find Bear having a sexual awakening in the form of Otter who just happens to be his best friends older brother. It is really hard to write this review without giving away the story and I refuse to do that. I can tell you that the Author TJ Klune really takes you on a roller coaster of emotions, I found myself attaching to each and every character in this book. Every character has an exceptional supporting role in the life of Bear. Creed is the Frat boy type, funny and full of himself. Anna is very strong, she is the character that is dealt the most pain other than Bear and Kid. She has to deal with her boyfriend’s new found sexuality. Mrs Paquin the next door neighbor is your strong don’t mess with me Grandmother type. Otter is big, strong and full of Love. Before I forget, Otter also has to be one of the most patient man put to paper. Kid has to be one of the greatest kid ever. He is one of those kids that is 8 going on 28, he knows it all and is usually correct. He once watched a documentary on slaughterhouses and became a vegetarian. Love Love this Kid.
This is a long story at my reading speed my Kindle rated my story to be just over 7 hours long. Could it have been edited a little, perhaps but the Author did such a great job of filling the pages I didn’t mind. There were so many times I wanted to throttle Bear I just couldn’t understand how he couldn’t let himself Trust. I really enjoyed this story, I am glad that I had the opportunity to read it and write this down for you. Oh by the way there is a follow up to this book.
