Connor Prescott is an entitled spoiled brat, just of age. Eric Swann is the somewhat older man assigned to keep tabs on the boy-man. Mixing business with pleasure is never a good idea, one Eric fully embraces… until he doesn’t.
From the are you nuts to the really, no really reactions to these two characters, there was still an element of inevitability to them connecting, despite Eric’s moral center epic fail in order to scratch an itch. When that itch walks off in a snit, fast forward five years to a supposedly surprise encounter, and the sparks that never should have ignited in the first place are still burning.
Except, those sparks come with baggage in the form of Tyler, a Dom at the now familiar club and Connor’s husband. Tyler and Connor have an open marriage, one that allows/encourages Eric back into a manipulative relationship that eventually exposes some deep-seated needs Eric has successfully buried up to that point.
With an almost ‘who’s on first’ vibe, Sub-Dominant works through the potential combinations and permutations, though this time there are some clear boundaries being pushed for both the characters and the reader alike. And while books 1 through 3 explore and illuminate the physical
and psychological trappings of the BDSM sub-culture, Sub-Dominant had the feel of straight up erotica—there for the titillation, the raised eyebrows, and a demand for suspension of disbelief that these three characters could reach not just an emotional connection but such a level of trust and respect within a very short time frame.
Of all the pairing throughout this series, this particular ménage did not ring true for this reviewer. The epiphanies and personal growth I’d come to expect from the author’s characters were instead simply platforms for illustrating the archetypes and bell-curve nature of personalities one might find within the BDSM community. The element of manipulation was too strong to ignore and easily overshadowed any emotional connection among the three men. In short, their combined relationships lacked authenticity and continued to call into doubt the characters’ motivations and ability to sustain such high risk encounters.
Sub-Dominant was an interesting journey into some higher risk BDSM practices, but it failed to deliver on the kind of emotional connection one craves with the characters. The denouement felt artificial and rushed, leaving more questions than answers. I’m giving this one 3.5 stars.
Putting a leash on a dominant sub is a task that may require two Doms to accomplish.
When relocation agent Eric Swann is assigned to ease young Connor Prescott into moving back to London, he expects the boy to be more enthusiastic—and less irritating.
Used to roaming freely among his mother’s D-list celebrity friends, Connor is anything but happy when his father decides to put him on a leash—a leash with a far too attractive handler on the other end. Secretly craving a man who knows how to yank his chain and show him exactly where the limits are, Connor does what he’s best at. He manipulates Eric into giving him what he wants, making the man reveal a side of him that Eric himself isn’t ready to accept.
Trained by one of the quirkiest Dom/sub-teams in the country, Dom Tyler Kane knows exactly how to handle a toppy sub. He keeps Connor on his toes, er, knees, in the bedroom, but when his capricious lover sets his heart on pushing yet another limit, Tyler finds himself not only with a dominant sub but also with a Dom who has yet to accept his true identity.
Reader Advisory: Due to sexually explicit content this book is intended for adult readers only. Contains scenes in which the main characters are sexually involved with secondary characters and vivid descriptions of unusual sexual practices.
While this book can be read as a standalone novel, it is best enjoyed as part of the series in order of release (Sub-Mission, Re-Submission, Sub-Culture, Sub-Dominant).
A willing slave to all the fascinating guys who keep queuing up and want their stories told, Sage can almost always be found cooking up the next hot story or daydreaming about new ways of rubbing sexy male bodies together to make the sparks fly.
