I had a real Love/Hate relationship with this book. I’ve tossed back and forth on how I was going to write this review because of the awkward relationship I had with the book. As much as my emotions want to rail against the book for having a couple of Het sex scenes in it and then my favorite character gets killed off, I reined in my emotions and looked at how the book was presented and if I received a sense that the book told the story I think the author imagined.
I felt that the story felt Real for the historical setting, The Raw Characters and Situations added a sense of depth to the story, I did need to sit back and think about it, but it was there. I believe that Lynn was trying to tell a story of love lost but then found again, in this regard it was a really beautiful story, I really appreciated how she mixed some of the characters together that tied the WHOLE story together.
The sex was plentiful and raw. Like I said earlier there were a couple of MF scenes, those actually left me feeling dirty and a little ewwwwwed out. I like to be clean when having sex and for me historical sex isn’t the cleanliest so even the MM scenes are really not arousing for me. (stricly a personal point and it does not reflect negatively on the book). To counterbalance the MF we do have an MMM scene that was quite fun.
I gave this book a 4 star based on the quality of writing and the story that I believe the author was trying to tell. If I was going to give it an emotional rating I would have to say a 3 star due to the death of my fav character and the MF scenes.
Drake is a mercenary for hire. He values little other than his sword and his skill. Fighting his attraction to the young men he trains, he refuses to take any on. When Ansel walks into his life, Drake breaks all his rules.
But life for mercenaries is hard, brutal and deadly.
Can Drake take a chance on finding the love he’s denied himself for so long?
Can he have a second chance?
Lynn loves writing stories where her characters have to struggle to reach their happily ever after, but she always promises they’ll get there. Born in New Orleans, living in Texas, she loves purple, green and gold, big hair, and tight blue jeans on cowboys.
