I don’t pretend to have any experience in the BDSM lifestyle. With that little disclaimer I did find the book believable in its conveyance of this lifestyle choice, I have read a couple BDSM stories and they were not as enjoyable as Bound by Lies. Beneath the bondage and pain there was a true love story.
Something did happen about 8% in to the story that involved animal cruelty, it made me shut my Kindle cover and made me think of whether or not I even wanted to continue reading. I think the Author was out of line and the incident could easily have been edited out or revised without hurting the storyline. It took me about 10 minutes to decide that I should push forward and read the rest.
What I found was a story that kept me captivated; it was erotic, sexy, loving and intense. It centers around 2 main characters, Brayden who had lived a life of hard knocks from being bullied in school, losing his father suddenly to illness and a Mother who essentially abandoned him to live abroad. He moved from small town Ohio to live in Miami where he worked as a lifeguard and bartender. It was clear that Brayden had not woken up his sexual side. He did have a brief and small interlope with his roommate Andre. It wasn’t until he was asked by his Grandmother to move back to Ohio that his sexual awareness opened up to him, in the form of Jenner Parrish.
Unknown to Brayden he was being watched by Jenner who had immediately fallen in lust with Brayden. Now Jenner is very much a DOM in this book, he is also way back in the dark part of the closet, hiding his sexual identity from everyone but his close friends and roommates. The twist here is Jenner is everything Brayden dislikes, Jenner was the Jock, he was part of the group that tortured Brayden in his school years. So when Brayden realizes that Jenner is everything to him it takes him by surprise.
The story evolves and addresses quite a few interesting issues; one of them that intrigued me the most is how a Master/Slave relationship could be misunderstood by even your closest friends and how a couple like Jenner and Brayden interact in public and with family in a relationship where there are protocols. Like I said earlier I am not as knowledgeable in this lifestyle but I feel the Author did an outstanding job of addressing all of these issues. As the reader I didn’t feel like a voyeur looking in on the lives of these guys but I felt a part of the story. One of the highlights of this read is Brayden’s comedic attitude when alone with Jenner, it really makes you smile.
This is a real love story, and you know how I can tell? Towards the end of the story there was a scene with Jenner’s family that made me tear up. If a little pain doesn’t bother you and you can get past the first 8% of the story you will find an alarmingly good book. This book gave me an insight into the BDSM lifestyle and I highly recommend it. The book not necessarily the lifestyle, but then again, the book may have you thinking about experimenting.
