I want to welcome Carter Quinn to the blog today while we are on the GRL 2016 Blog Tour. Carter is Guest Blogging and he has also brought along a very nice Giveaway for 2 readers, you can find out more in his Guest Post and at the end in the Giveaway section.
I have not had the pleasure of meeting Carter yet but come October that will be resolved.
Good morning! Thanks for having me! It’s been a while since I’ve been here, so I feel like this is the first day of school. I’ll just picture you all in your underwear. *Closes eyes tight. Counts to three. Opens them.* Oh that’s so much better. I’ve never seen so many sports bras and tighty whiteys in my life! Or is it tidy whities? I never kno—oh hey, you in the back! Mr. Blue-eyes-that-match-your-budgie-smuggler. I need to see you after class about international trade violations.
Anyway, so we’re here to listen to me talk about GRL. I know everyone says it, but I really have met some truly incredible people at the retreat. I remember Albuquerque best (even though I was soused the entire damn time!) because I was there as a reader. My first book had only come out three months earlier, so I hadn’t qualified for a writer spot yet. I’m really glad I went that year. Not only was the venue freaking perfect, but there was zero pressure, so I could be free to be me! And, really, that’s what you newbies need to remember: Just Do You! If you follow that piece of advice, you’ll make life-long friends. Not everyone. Not even close. But a few, who will make it worth coming back again and again. In Atlanta and San Diego, I was so wrapped up in worrying about the business side of things that I forgot to enjoy myself and the people around me. This year, I’m not going to allow that to be the case. I’m going to plop my ass down in the bar and/or the lobby, just like we did in Albuquerque, and talk to whomever happens by.
I feel freer this year. Perhaps it’s because we’re on my own turf finally. I despise driving in Kansas City with every breath in my body Have you tried to go to the airport from I-70? Take it from me, you’ll swear they’re building more road just over the horizon so you’ll never, ever get there! And don’t get me started on that time I picked up my best friend from basic training in Ft Leonard Wood. Suffice it to say that we were talking so much that we spent three hours going around in circles in KC. Ah, the lovely days before GPS. Seriously, hug your nav device close and give it a big kiss before you leave for GRL. You’ll be glad you did!
I went to KU, which some of you may know is just down K-10 from Kansas City. It’s about 25 minutes, give or take an idiot or two. I’ve always said Lawrence is the only city in Kansas in which I would voluntarily live. It’s beautiful (when the students are gone). It’s a Liberal Bastion in a sea of rethuglican red. And it’s the home of the University of Kansas, which I love more than almost anything in the world. Having GRL so close by means I’m going to get to reunite with some of the family of friends I haven’t seen since shortly after I left for Colorado in 2012. I miss them like crazy.
The point here is, don’t be like me. Don’t let time and distance keep you from the ones you love. And for Pete’s sake, tell them any time you can how much they mean to you. Those are lessons I’m quite sure Henry, my protagonist in the Vanished trilogy would agree with profoundly.
What? You don’t know who I’m talking about? Well, honey, here’s your chance to find out! With this post, I’ll give away two copies (PDF, Mobi, EPUB) of Vanished: The Complete Trilogy omnibus. Comment away to win! I’ll see some of you in Kansas City! Thanks for playing!
