K. Vale emailed me a couple weeks back and asked if I’d take a look at her new book, she reminded me of her first book that I read and reviewed. That book was Forever and Now, I went to her GGR Author page and read the review that I had posted. It brought back so many great memories of a well told story, I sent her a message back and told her that yes I’d read the book. Double Takes went beyond my expectations, WooHoo I consider this a win for me, I was able to read a really fun and good book.
This book has a totally different story line than any other book I have had the good fortune of reading. The story centers around Giovani Savale (Gio) the front man for the band Three Deaf Mice. He’s unhappily married, going through a divorce and the father of a 9 yr old boy, the only good thing that is in his life right now. Lance Garrett is the owner of Double Takes, a sort of consignment, sell your stuff shop. It takes us on a journey of reality TV, an unhappy marriage, the love of a son, the life of a Rock Star and the notoriety that it brings. It also brings us the a bonding of souls, two men, one gay and out, the other straight.
Here is the biggest thing for me with K. Vale’s writing style. This book had multiple plot themes and what was so good about it was the plots weren’t introduced in the beginning of the book and then they all had a summation at the end. The plot theme only ran as far as it needed to let the story progress and unfold, these plots really kept the story moving and interesting.
Because Gio and the band have not been touring, money was a little on the low side. Gio needed to be home to handle the custody hearings for his son Marco and the divorce proceedings with his wife. Gio and the band signed on to star in a Reality TV Show. To bolster ratings the producer wanted Gio to explore bisexuality as in get a “boyfriend”. He gets a TV boyfriend, Kyrie. Kyrie is cute and play acts the perfect boyfriend for the cameras. Gio also finds himself attracted to the Hot bear of a man that owns Double Takes the shop Gio goes to in hopes of selling off some of his wife’s abandoned possessions.
I’m reading along and thinking to myself that this is a REALLY good love story, I’m really enjoying the characters and I was just so happy that Gio and Lance had found each other. As I’m reading I’m also thinking of what I am going to write in my review. One of the things that I kept thinking, “this is a perfectly executed love story”. The characters are so real to me, the bond that they have with each other is so believable and the sex is written exceptionally well. So, happy me, I’m reading along and then a twist at the end almost knocked me down. This is the part in the blurb about your past coming back to haunt you. That’s all I’m going to say about that, I really want you to experience how it was written first hand.
I’m going to give this book “Scott’s Recommendation”. It is beautifully written, the story lines really move along, all of the characters relate well in the story, a twist (I always enjoy a good twist) and an “Oh” so happy ending.
Book Description Sex, drugs, rock and roll … and now reality TV! As the lead singer in a nineties-era band, Giovanni Savale is used to seeing his name in the headlines, but now, as the star of a new reality TV show, his life is on display for all to see. From the custody battle for his son to a “made for TV” romance to the possibility of a future with the sexy owner of the local antique store, Giovanni’s life has just gotten complicated in ways he had never imagined. You’ll love Double Takes, the hot new romance from author K. Vale.
Ah, the life of a rock star. Everyone thinks it’s nothing but sex, drugs, and rock and roll.
Not for Giovanni Savale.
For the lead singer of Three Deaf Mice, a band that reached its pinnacle in the late nineties, it’s nothing but an ugly divorce with a custody battle, money trouble, and now the nightmare exposure of starring in a reality television show. When his producer decides to cash in on an infamous interview Gio did years ago, and give the self-confessed bisexual rocker an onscreen boyfriend, things really hit the fan. Gio is certain his sexual experimentation back in his drug-abusing days meant nothing — after all he’s been married for nine years, clean and sober for nearly as long, and he has a son. And Gio is not remotely attracted to Kyrie, the funny, flamboyant actor they choose for his love interest. Of course, Lance Garrett, the mysterious and sexy owner of the local antique shop, Double Takes, is a whole different story. The guy has Gio planning out a future he never imagined. With the threat of losing all custody of his ten-year-old son, ghosts from the past returning for revenge, and the cameras rolling, can Gio keep his head above water and his heart from getting broken?
