First of all, I want you to know I read this book in one day. I am a mystery lover, and this book grabbed me and I couldn’t put it down. Skipped lunch, laid on the couch with a blanket over me because it was cold outside and I wasn’t going anywhere, started reading, and finished it in time to fix supper. The book is wonderful.
First You Fall was the 2009 winner of the Lambda Literary Award for Best Gay Mystery. With the suspense, humor, and interesting, well developed cast of characters, this book very well deserved the award.
Kevin is an escort working who enjoys his job, and has not had any serious difficulties with being a hustler. He has friends, a nice place to live, and options in life when he is ready. His life goes on just fine until one day he goes to see his close friend Allen, and finds a group of people outside Allen’s apartment, standing around a dead Allen. When he realizes who is on the ground, Kevin identifies the body to the detectives on the case, and thus starts an adventure that makes this book what it is. One of the cops is his old flame Tony, an extremely good looking Italian guy who Kevin had known for years. He is told that Allen’s death was a suicide, but Kevin doesn’t buy it. Allen was a man full of life and not a depressed old queen, as some seemed to imply. Kevin takes it upon himself to figure out what really happened, and with his best friend Freddy, they go on an adventure in investigation that turns into a life and death struggle.
Scott Sherman has created a cast of characters and a story that will pull you in and not let you go. I fell in love with Kevin. He is so lovable, and his friends are endearing and funny. The Harrington family is mysterious and dangerous, and you felt that from the beginning of meeting them. Such a well written book is a fun thing to read, and this book did not disappoint. Save yourself a block of time, settle back, and enjoy this fun and intriguing gay mystery!
