Hi, my name is Petra and I am addicted to books. No, I won’t apologise for that.
I’ve been reading from an early age, something my parents applauded. If given the choice between reading ‘inappropriate’ literature and not reading, my parents would always choose the first option. As a matter of fact, this was actually discussed at some point; my mother stated that a child will stop reading something if they do not understand it or are uncomfortable with it. I think that holds true for all children.
My first, and for a long time last, gay novel was by a Dutch author, Gerard Reve. I must have been about 12, I think. The title has escaped me but it was about two young people. To this day, I don’t know the gender of the main characters, or even if they were the same gender. I do know that the author was openly gay and that I read the characters as both to be boys. Not reading more gay literature was never a conscious decision, it just happened, but I am glad that I found my way back to it.
The stories I love most have some kind of magical, mythical or fantastical creatures in it. That is not a necessity but I just love Fantasy and Science Fiction. Then again, a good plot and relatable characters can suck me straight into a story, regardless of the genre. My aim is to get more young adults (YA) to read. Anything and everything in general, but gay literature in specific; I will be reviewing a lot of YA novels.
One last thing. I have always edited reports and papers for my day job. That is about to change; I am starting for myself as a professional copy editor and proof reader… I am so excited!
