I was so prepared for this. I took Tuesday off of work so I could spend a leisurely time getting everything prepared. This went worked out so well. I was able to go to the store for new socks and I found the cutest pair of shoes, win win. I laid out all of my clothes and put different things together so I had a few different outfits. All in all Tuesday was a relaxing day and it really got me excited for Wednesday, the day I leave for Kansas City.
Up at 530 which is my normal time, Greg gets ready for work and leaves at 7. I’m packed and ready to go at 930, so now what do I do? My flight isn’t scheduled until 1249 and I wasn’t going to call my Uber until about 11-1115, so I went out and bought some flowers and peanut butter M&M’s for Greg, sort of a surprise for when he returns home from work.
Fast forward and I’m in the Uber on the way to the airport. In Broward County 595 is the East West highway, we live just a short distance from it, and it really ends at the airport and Port Everglades. So anyways said Uber driver almost didn’t make the on ramp to 595 off of Hiatus, but he does. We are driving along and I notice that we are in an Exit only lane to get on the Florida Turnpike, I tell the driver that this is not going to get us to the airport. He’s like but the GPS is telling me Exit A, I felt like saying look at the Exit number you dumbass. Seriously you are going to be a driver for Uber and you can’t even get to the Fort Lauderdale airport without GPS when you are on the highway that takes you straight there? I should have seen this as a sign of what was to come.
My original booked plans were to go from FLL at 1249 to ORD and then MCI getting in at about 430. My plans were perfect, mind you I did check the flight status before I left and everything was OK. Arrive at airport and my flight was delayed until 3 something, which also meant that I would miss my ORD connection. Then the 3ish flight got bumped back to 411. So after spending almost 5 hrs in the FLL airport I finally get on my flight. Oh what a relief it is, and it was for 2 hours, clear skies, a nice lunch and wine and my Kindle, I was happy. About 45 minutes out of Chicago the Captain tells the flight attendants to get in their jump seats because she was expecting turbulence in about 5 minutes. No cabin clean up they get in their seats, and then it started getting bumpy. The kind of bumpy where you just held onto what was yours, including your wine glass and I actually grabbed one of the glasses for my seat mate, yes I’m sort of chivalrous like that. So for 30-40 minutes we bumped and shook, it was horrible. Then it cleared out right before we went in for the landing. I’ve never seen flight attendants move so fast to get everything picked up and stowed away. So now I am in Chicago, safe but shaken.
I find the gate for my connecting flight and guess what? Another delay! By now I’ve just given up and just go with it, I told Diane that “It’s a crap shoot on what happens next”. So finally at about 830 we are on board and taxiing for take off and the pilot tells us we are only #14 in line. OMG I just couldn’t catch a break. We get to Kansas City easily, I get my Uber and I’m in my Hotel room at about 1230. I barely unpacked, got into bed and I bet I was out in 5 minutes.
So that was my travel day, I hope everyone else had an easier time than I did.
See you tomorrow,
