This is the first of the Gaslight Mysteries. I am going to start out by saying I am a mystery buff. I have read every Sherlock Holmes, and as much Agatha Christie that I can get my hands onto. I am a mystery lover, and I was not disappointed.
This book is really a good, fun read. It moves quickly, has great sex, and plays with your emotions in a genius way. It is filled with twists and turns, and kept me engrossed for hours! And the characters are wonderful. Simon Hart is a down-on-his-luck private investigator. His partner of two years, and an almost lover (he thinks) has just been killed in their office. Simon discovers him with his head and chest lying on the desk in their office in a pool of blood.
There are very few clues, and Simon is despondent. “Sargent” Castleton, his dead partner was his friend, his partner, and his flat mate. He was pretty much everything to Simon. Simon puts an advertisement into the paper for a flat mate, and spends his days in somewhat of a fog.
Michael McCree is a mysterious man who applies to be the flat mate to Simon, not disclosing that he has been watching Simon for a week, following him, and learning his habits. Michael McCree is not what he appears, and throughout the story, we get to know him better and better.
The best part of the situation though, is the dynamic between the two characters as they meet, antagonize, relax, and then start to trust each other with their lives, and eventually, develop their relationship into something even more. But can Simon trust this mysterious man who happened on his doorstep? This McCree is pushing him to do more than he wants to, forces him to trust him, but is he fooling Simon? Good questions. They embark on finding the killer of Sargent, with the help of a couple of unexpected to me, spies to help, and with humor, sex, tension, suspense, and those twists and turns I was talking about, lead us through a mystery novel that is well worth reading. As you know, I love Erin’s work, and this whole series just proves I am right.
