I’m very excited to have the author of the Life Without Parole series here with us today. Please welcome Jeff Erno, he is going to talk about his newest series and he is also doing a Giveaway.
Hi everyone! What a pleasure to be featured on Gay.Guy.Reading and Friends. I really appreciate the opportunity to talk about my new series/serial Life Without Parole, and I’m so thankful for all the blogs and websites that agreed to participate in the tour. It’s been a while since I’ve done any of this kind of promotion, but I’m excited to be back in the blogosphere where it all started for me. Years ago, when I first started writing, I co-owned and operated a review site called Michele ‘n Jeff Reviews which was where I became so familiar with the mm romance genre and met so many wonderful people, many of whom became my literary heroes.
For those who aren’t familiar with who I am and what I write, my work is not easily categorized into one box or style. I’ve released a variety of gay-themed literature including BDSM, gay erotica, gay fiction, young adult, paranormal, sci-fi, mystery, and young adult. Although I have no way of knowing the exact composition of my audience, I’ve surmised from feedback and sales history that my readers are also not easily labeled in terms of literary tastes. I think I have more of a hybrid audience, a following of mm romance fans and some gay fiction readers. Since my first popular books were mostly young adult, I think a lot of potential readers assumed that’s all I write, and I’ve been working hard ever since to get the word out that I don’t just write for teens.
Life Without Parole is definitely an adult-themed story. The main character is young, but he’s of legal age, serving a life sentence in an adult men’s prison. The final book of this six-book series releases Friday on the eXtasy Books website, and I specifically chose this week to launch this tour so that readers would have all the books available to them were they to choose to read the series. I should add that it’s more of a serial than a series with stand-alone reads. The books are all part of one long story, spanning over 200k words. The books won’t make sense if read out of order.
Back in the late 90s and early 2000s, I first dipped my toes into the waters of fictional storytelling by creating a BDSM serial that I posted on an amateur website called the Nifty Archive. That story, Puppy Love, was created in installments, and the continuous feedback I received via email from readers bolstered my confidence enough to continue with the story. Interestingly, I fell in love with each of the characters, and they became so real to me that I sort of thought of them as distinct entities that existed apart from me. I laughed at them, cried with and for them, got pissed at them, and was even surprised by them.
I was thrilled to experience this same phenomenon while writing Life Without Parole. I became invested in each of the characters and their specific sub-plots. LWP, however, is told in the third-person limited POV where Puppy Love is a first person singular narrative. So the scene breaks and chapter divisions do shift from one character to the next, and often the scenes end in cliffhangers like a soap opera.
The main story is about Jeremy Banks, a nineteen year old who’s been convicted of murder and sentenced to life without parole. He finds himself paired with a cellmate, Trey, who is very much a loner and who doesn’t exactly have the most welcoming, outgoing personality. Trey not only comes across as a bit standoffish but at times borderline rude. He’s rough around the edges and pretty much doesn’t give a shit what anyone thinks of him, but Jeremy admires Trey’s independence and his toughness.
Trey, on the other hand, sees Jeremy as weak and vulnerable. At first annoyed to even have a roommate, he lays down the law, informing Jeremy to leave him alone and stay out of his business. Slowly, though, they begin to warm to each other. And you guessed it, a romance blossoms.
Several other sub plots emerge involving corrections officers, inmates, and connections on the outside. Sometimes within the space of a single book, the separate plots do not necessarily seem to connect and are left open-ended. The reader might at first view some of these scenes as non-essential. The sub-plots do converge, however, and each of these smaller stories are in some way connected to the main story of Jeremy and Trey.
My hope is that readers fall in love with these characters as I have. I openly admit this is not typical, formulaic m/m romance. There are several HEAs, but not all the characters find their treasure at the end of a rainbow. I do think those romance fans who demand their happy-ever-afters will be satisfied, though.
I’m excited to share the story with any and all who’ll give it a chance. I’m offering a giveaway of the entire series at the end of this blog tour. You can leave comments on any of the blogs. I’ll gather all the names, one entry from each participant per blog (meaning if you comment on more than one blog you’ll receive an entry for each). I will give away one entire set of the six book series and one single book at each blog, reader’s choice.
Thanks again to Gay.Guy.Reading and Friends, and thanks to all the readers who’ve so graciously supported my work. I hope you enjoy the story.
