I am pleased to introduce you to K.A. Mitchell today. K.A. is joining us today on the GRL 2016 Author Blog Tour with a very wonderful Guest Post and we are also doing a spotlight on Getting Him Back.
(I just want to say, I absolutely adored this post, I feel very special to have it on GGR…Scott)
Part of Us
Maybe I’m easy but there’s a definite thrill involved in being a part of an us. I have to say though, as a lesbian who loves to read and write gay male romance, the thrill of belonging hasn’t always been that easy to come by.
My first connections were with books. I wanted to be part of the community I saw in the stories, to share the super tight bonds of the characters. I imagined myself into them as if I could jump into the pages.
I got my first chance at belonging when I got on a bus full of women on their way to a Take Back the Night March. I only knew one or two of them, but immediately felt like they were me, we were us. My skin hummed with something close to that belonging.
A month later I had my first lesbian kiss and things got a whole lot clearer.
That community welcomed me with cheers when I first stepped into a gay bar in 1982. I loved my new us, have fought for and cried with us for the past thirty plus years.
I felt close to another community over the years, but always a bit apart. I wasn’t sure I could be me, the lesbian, gay male romance loving me in the world of romance writers. Some people accepted me, some wanted people like me to go away or at least be quiet about it. I hung around on the fringes until someone told me that I wasn’t alone, that there were other people who liked reading the same kind of stories.
I poked around on the internet and found a new world, a new us. And the connection was amazing. There were people who loved what I loved. They read and wrote and talked about it. They celebrated differences.
I was happy. But nothing could have prepared me for my first trip to GayRomLit in Atlanta. The minute I walked into the hotel, I was surrounded by us. I’d found my community. A lively, loving, welcoming community. And I have never stopped being so very grateful for that welcome.
From my first trips with characters, I’ve longed for a place where people loved them as I did. Here you—we—are.
Only a few weeks left! I can’t wait to be with us again.
