I finished reading this and I thought the word “Casual”. For me Casual is Comfortable and that is the way I felt after reading this. Casual is not to be misinterpreted for Mediocre because this latest work from K.C. Wells is wonderful. Casual is the description that I would interpret the relationship building that Nick and Alex went through in this story, it hits all the right buttons. K.C. has a way with words and she isn’t afraid to explore the man, her characterizations bring real life to this Contemporary Novella.
Nick is a 39 year old school teacher, and has never been with a man since his sexual awakening happened when a young man sat in the front row of his class. Fast forward 8 years, Nick is taking a drive in the country when he comes across a hitchhiker that looked familiar. The man standing on the side of the road with his thumb out is Alex Nordmann, the same Alex Nordmann that sat in the front row of his class. Alex had a bright future and was taken down but survived leukemia. After struggling with disease he wanted to come clean with the rest of who he is, and he came out to his parents. Parents were not happy and insinuated that it be best that he did not live under their roof any longer. Nick offered his spare room to Alex and he accepted.
What happens after is the “Casual”, the learning and the conversations. This is where the author shown like a bright light, the way that she wrote the coming together of Nick and Alex was beautiful. They truly had time to learn about each other, they learned to trust each other and that education and trust came through conversation. The conversations were so relevant as we learned of the past life experiences in each of Nick and Alex’s life. It was these experiences and the interaction between the characters that kept me riveted to this book until it came to a close.
When I first looked at the cover I thought that the men on it looked sad and I was a little taken aback. After reading the book I understood it more, the loss and emptiness that it portrayed is how these men were before they found each other, I can just imagine the back cover. It would be of two men with smiles and with life in their eyes and of course Alex would have a cocky crook to his smile.
Nick Tremantle has had a rough ten months. His professional life took a nosedive, and then his mom’s health took a turn for the worse. In a short space of time, everything changed. So when he spies the young man hitchhiking, Nick pulls over – he needs all the Karma he can lay his hands on. But when the identity of the young man is revealed, it sets in motion a chain of events that unfold quickly, changing Nick’s life completely.
Alex Nordmann’s life has definitely not gone the way he’d planned. Gone are his dreams of an education and living his life ‘his’ way. He’d thought the worst was over, until the morning he decided to come out to his parents. It just goes to show, people will surprise you every time. For instance, who could have foreseen that the man who gives him a ride – and an unexpected lifeline – would have been Alex’s first crush all those years ago? Alex has no idea what’s coming at him….
