I was so happy to find a book that dealt with the Bear Culture. Bears in the Gayborhood: In male bisexual and gay culture, a bear is a large, hairy man who projects an image of rugged masculinity.
Chris is no stranger to receiving blowjobs indiscreetly, in restrooms and the occasional bathhouse but has only kissed one other man. The only other man he has ever kissed is Rohan a former college football teammate, during a hasty make out and hand job session in the front seat of Chris’s pick up truck during college. Chris ventures into Boystown a predominantly gay neighborhood in Chicago looking for a little action, as luck would have it he enters a party and is reintroduced to Rohan. Rohan is an out and proud business owner and Chris sits quietly in the closet and here lies the angst of the story. As Chris is drawn to Rohan, Rohan is pretty clear that he does not have time for partners that are still in the closet.
The author gave a fairly good portrayal of a “bear” and it was a relief to read. I really enjoyed the story line and what the author was telling us. She took us through the struggles of coming out and what it felt like to be with another man in the sense of being with them, and not a quicky in a backroom. I have to commend this author on giving me a proper picture of the characters, she defined the characters to the point where it was easy to picture them in my mind.
When reading a contemporary book I like to believe in the characters and I didn’t totally believe in Chris. If Chris would have been 30 instead of 42, I think that his naive character would have been more believable. Chris is also a successful businessman taking over the insurance agency from his Father, he was out to his Sister and Brother and apparently the only person he had not told was his Mother. He wasn’t living a lie with someone else so I didn’t see any reason that at 42 he was still in the closet and had only kissed Rohan and that was 20 years ago. It did add a cute twist to the story but for me I didn’t find it believable.
