Pete is an EMT, leading the full, busy life you would expect of a paramedic. Ash is an artist who designs and tattoos his own work onto his clients. Pete has had his share of bad things happening in his life, like his father being killed when he was young. Ash on the other hand, has lived an extremely tortured life, going from foster home to foster home. This life eventually leads to drugs, and living on the street for a long time. He carries secrets that work to destroy him from the inside out.
The characters in this book go through the ups and downs of being roommates and lovers, but as time goes, things start getting distinctly worse. Ash has become distant and very unstable. Pete is much attuned to this, and tries desperately to help his friend and lover get through those times. But is he seeing all that he needs to see? Are Ash’s problems deeper than even Pete can comprehend? And can Pete help him?
This read is amazing. I did have a bit of a problem keeping the characters separated because of the format of the book. It moves between characters as chapters, and occasionally it got to the point where I had to go back to see who was talking. That having been said, this is definitely a psychologically influenced book, with the suspense and drama moving very quickly, and the ending being a complete surprise! The contrast between the two main characters is tense at times, loving at times, and exasperating at times. It makes this a bit less of a fluff book that some can be. I liked it!
Shy tattoo artist Ash has a troubled past. Years of neglect, drug abuse, and life on the streets have taken their toll, and sometimes it seems the deep, unspoken bond with his lover is the only balm for wounds he doesn’t quite understand.
Chicago paramedic Pete is warmth, love, and strength—things Ash never knew he could have, and never even knew he wanted until Pete showed him. But fate is a cruel, cruel mistress, and when nightmares collide with the present, their tentatively built world comes crashing down.
Traumatic events in Pete’s work life distance him from home, and he doesn’t realize until it’s too late that Ash has slipped away. Betrayal, secrets, and lies unfold, and when a devastating coincidence takes hold, Pete must fight with all he has to save the love of his life.
