This book is billed as an Erotic Romance. I have to say it is more Erotic – Romance. What I mean by that is, the two don’t go together in this book and the terms seem separated by the actions of the characters. I’m even going to go as far as to say that this wasn’t really Erotica and if the story would have been told without the sex scenes it would have been much more enjoyable.
I enjoyed the romantic side of the story as Shane and Nathan got to know each other, the author did a good job of building the anticipation with the reader on how the relationship between the characters was going to progress. Nathan’s trepidation with his feelings for another man felt genuine and I think they fit well within the story. Shawn, an in the closet gay man was actually sort of comical, and I mean that in a good way, as he maneuvered around Nathan trying to confirm his sense that Nathan may have feelings for him. This romantic part of the story is a trope told many times but I felt that the author gave it their own spin and I felt good about it.
As I already mentioned the Erotica side of the story left me soft, the intentions were good, the execution was wrong. Shawn is gay but inexperienced and Nathan has never been with a man before, that can be very hot. One of the things I always ask myself is if the sexual acts are believable, if they are then the Erotica side of the story can be explosive. In the case of this story, I didn’t believe it. Their first anal experience was on the side of a road in the car, with only spit from a single finger to prepare the bottom for penetration. I cannot believe this, the poor guy on the bottom had to have been in so much pain, having basically been dry penetrated and in an uncomfortable position in a car, not going to happen in any sexual encounter I’ve had or stories from friends ever having. The solo scenes with Shawn were good and those felt realistic, these scenes actually helped the story line progress.
This is why I say that the Erotic side and the Romantic side didn’t come together. The coupling was too rough against the romantic side of the story. The book had a good foundation, I appreciated the growth that Shawn took in the story, I felt he had matured and I even liked Nathan at the end. The book needs a bit of polish and the sex scenes needed to be more realistic.
Shane is a sexy young twenty-something whose life revolves around the gym, work and caring for his Mom. His sexuality is a burden he simply doesn’t want to deal with. When he asks a handsome rugged hunk called Nathan to spot him one day while working out, he is forced to deal with those hidden sexual desires. Of course like most thing’s in Shane’s life, the situation is complex with his new found love interest due to be married soon. With time ticking by to Nathans wedding day together they must decide is this simply lust or love?
