Gay.Guy.Reading and Friends welcomes Toby Aden to the blog today. Toby is the author of the Melrose Coven series and she has graciously accepted an interview with us.
Tell us a little about yourself, if you were to pick something what would you like others to absolutely know about you?
I’ve always had an overactive imagination. I’m an avid reader who spends much of my time immersed in the world of romantic novels. After discovering the world of MM romance, I became irrevocably enthralled by it and decided to try my hand writing it.
What kind of diet and fitness regime do you follow?
I really don’t believe in dieting, no offense to those who do. I’m more of a eat whatever kind of person except for pork and a lot of shell animals. It does help that I’m the type who can eat whatever and never gain weight!
How often do you travel? Do you prefer to travel or are you more of a homebody?
I love the idea of travelling and seeing all that the world has to offer though I haven’t had the chance to do much of that. And on that note, I will definitely be adding travelling to my to-do list though it also doesn’t bother me being a homebody.
What are 5 things you can’t live without?
Looking back, what did you do right that helped you break in?
I started my writing career three years ago and the one thing for sure was that I never gave up. Given, yes I started with MF romance but once I got into MM books, I turned my focus this way and kept at it.
What would be your best advice to new writers?
Write, write and keep writing. There would definitely be a time when you’d feel like giving it up, publishers rejecting works your slaved over but it pays in the end if its a passion you never give up on
Your debut novel. How did it feel?
My debut novel was The Vampire King’s Mate [The Melrose Coven 1] after I sent the book off, I was preoccupied with other stuff to the point that it escaped my mind but the day I saw the acceptance email. Gosh, I was so thrilled I kept jumping and screaming. It was an intoxicated feeling and now, I see that just getting the book out by itself is just the first step. Publicity and advertisment came next then seeing good reviews about my work… It still shocks me to see my name on a book and know that yes, I finally made it!
Some of our readers might not know much about The Vampire King’s Mate. Are you able to tell us a bit about it?
The first book in the series The Melrose Coven, a contemporary paranormal romance depicting the adverse relationship between the wolves and vampires. With the war brimming between the two species and talks of resolution between King Kevyan Melrose, King of the vampire race and his councilmembers, Kevyan doesn’t expect to find his mate, Dorian Keller, an omega werewolf with no knowledge as to his heritage or his real identity.
What would you tell readers to convince them to read The Vampire King’s Mate?
If you are a fan of paranormal MM romance, and a fan of stories about vampires and werewolves, the two abrasive species, you wouldn’t want to miss this book!
How important would you say marketing yourself as a published author is? Any tips?
As I said earlier. Getting your book published is step one of the whole thing. Marketing step two and three. People won’t know about you or your books unless there’s enough publicity about it. Word of mouth is a very great tool so Marketing is a very vital tool to the industry unless one wants to become a one book wonder according to me.
Are any of your characters based on real life individuals?
Unfortunately or fortunately, no. I haven’t written a book based on a real life individual. My characters are all from my mind, noisily making themselves known!
