Character Interview: Connor Graham
Proust’s Questionnaire is a list of 35 questions which, in the late nineteenth century, was given to the young Marcel Proust by a friend. The questionnaire has become famous over the years, and is used to interview celebrities on television, in magazines, and more. I selected a handful of the questions to interview each of my characters. These are Connor’s answers to his selection of questions—Jed’s will be posted in a separate character interview!
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
A bowl of ice cream to share with Jed.
What is your greatest fear?
Being alone. I’ve always been independent—I had to be—but I never realized how lonely I was until I met Jed, and I wasn’t anymore.
What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
Impatience. I get excited and I push for what I want instead of just letting it happen. Sometimes, you just have to trust that it will.
Which living person do you most admire?
Jed’s nephew, Billy. That little dude can get Jed to do anything. I gotta get him to teach me his secrets.
What is your greatest extravagance?
My wardrobe. I work in the fashion industry, and I like to look good.
What is your current state of mind?
What do you most dislike about your appearance?
I’m okay with how I look. I mean, I could stand to lose a few lbs, but then I’d have to buy new clothes…wait, what was the question? Nah, I’m good with how I look.
What is the quality you most like in a man?
What is the quality you most like in a woman?
That maternal instinct thing. It reminds me of my mom—in a good way.
Which talent would you most like to have?
I’d like to sing as well as Jed does. He has a beautiful singing voice.
What is your most treasured possession?
There’s a photo I took at the farm—Jed was all stern-faced and trying to look stoic, and I goosed his neck right before the shutter clicked and made him laugh instead. I love that photo.
Which historical figure do you most identify with?
Who are your heroes in real life?
Only one—my Jed.

The Book Description:
Connor Graham is a city boy—a celebrated fashion photographer in New York. When his uncle’s death drags him back to the family blueberry farm, all he wants to do is sell it as quickly as he can. Until he meets his uncle’s tenant farmer.
Jed Jones, shy and stammering, devout and dedicated, has always yearned for land of his own and a man to share it with. Kept in the closet by his church, family, and disastrous first love, he longs to be accepted for who he is. But now, with his farm and his future in Connor’s careless hands, he stands to lose even the little he has.
Neither man expects the connection between them. Jed sees Connor—appreciates his art and passion like no one else in this godforsaken town ever has. Connor hears Jed—looks past his stutter to listen to the man inside. The time they share is idyllic, but with the farm sale pending, even their sanctuary is a source of tension. As work, family, and their town’s old-fashioned attitudes pull them apart, they must find a way to reconcile commitments to their careers and to each other.
Meet the Author:
Author of over a dozen novels, novellas, and short stories, Vanessa North delights in giving happy-ever-afters to characters who don’t think they deserve them. Relentless curiosity led her to take up knitting and run a few marathons “just to see if she could.” She started writing for the same reason. Her very patient husband pretends not to notice when her hobbies take over the house. Living and writing in Northwest Georgia, she finds her attempts to keep a quiet home are frequently thwarted by twin boy-children and a very, very large dog.
