Whiskey and Rye picks up the Series with Damien trying to get out of the Asylum because of a fire raging about him. He gets outside and wham the first murder victim (can’t tell you who though, that would be a spoiler) so anyways he escapes and makes it to a road. Wham Bam he is hit by a car. Then we find him with a Cowboy hat on singing and strumming his guitar for tips. This bothered me at the time, I felt like I was missing out on something. This was soon after forgotten about as the story and action really start to roll.
Damien meets the owner of the Tavern that he has been playing in front of Sionn Murphy and they develop a friendship. This relationship will have Damien and Sionn becoming a couple and the Main Characters in this book.
Something that you have to keep in mind is, Damien doesn’t have all of his memory, he has bits and pieces. He is drawn to San Fransicso and the Pier areas specifically, he is desperate to find his friend Miki St. John and try to get his life back together. While looking for Miki, Damien also has a killer after him. As the reader you know that there is someone out to Kill off Damien but the characters are unaware for quite a bit of time in the book. The villain in this book is so well written, as the reader you just loathe him and what made the reading interesting was we got to see the killers point of view quite a few times. For me this really added depth to the story and kept it quite dimensional.
Miki and Kane do come back in this book and are an important part of it. So if you were like me I was so happy to see that. We also get to revisit Kane’s family. You definitely have to read Sinner’s Gin before Whiskey and Rye, I don’t think that Whiskey and Rye would stand alone that well and the reader would be missing out on so many of the supporting character dynamics that are built in Sinner’s Gin.
Sinners Series #1 and #2 are both books that I give a high recommendation.
