Welcome back to the blog tour and giveaway for my newest release, Wolf en Garde. I’ve been taking these opportunities to introduce, or in some cases re-introduce, the characters and places found in the story through tiny teasers from the novel. And I’m about to make a couple of you snarl at me.
It’s not intentional, of course, but I know it’s inevitable. I knew it the first time I read a review for Wolf, WY, wherein the reviewer snarked at my next character’s attitude: The Honorable Mary Carleton-Connor, mother to Randy and wife to Henry.
It took me a few minutes of reading the “haven’t we seen enough characters like this?” not only on my own review but on the reviews of associates with “similar” characters, to figure out what the heck the reviewer was talking about. They didn’t like that I’d written the mother—the woman—as a nasty person. Apparently this is overdone in our genre. And worse, as I started reading blog posts about just this thing, I got the impression that some readers felt that by including characters like this in our stories, the author was obviously some kind of a hater of mothers. Or, perhaps, even, women in general.
And as I thought of the rest of the female characters in the Wolf series—the child Hannah, the late Mrs. O’Connell—and the gender of my villain, I was at a loss to understand why having one female antagonist labelled me as such an eye-roll-worthy writer. Bitter, disillusioned, self-centered people exist on all levels of the gender scale. And I make sure that they all have a place in my novels. And trust me… I love my Mom to the end of the world and back again. She’d kill me if she thought otherwise. 😉
Before I get into the teaser for this character, I want to remind you to read through to the end of the post to find out how you could win your very own signed, print copy of Wolf en Garde, a sterling silver (nickel and lead-free) Howling Wolf Bangle, and a $20 gift certificate to the Less Than Three Press book market!
And now, I present…
